JonBenet Ramsey: With The Captain of True Crime Garage

The Captain, co-host of the True Crime Garage Podcast, joins Who Killed…? to talk one of the most infamous unsolved Christmas murders of all time, 6 year-old JonBenet Ramsey.
Statement on the 25th Anniversary of the JonBenet Ramsey Murder
As of December 2021, the Boulder Police Department has processed more than 1,500 pieces of evidence related to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey.
JonBenet was 6 years old when she was reported missing on Dec. 26, 1996, after her family reported finding a ransom note inside their home in the 700 block of 15th Street. Her body was found in a basement room, and a later autopsy revealed that the cause of her death was strangulation.
As of December 2021, that evidence has included the analysis of nearly 1,000 DNA samples.
The BPD Major Crimes Unit has received, reviewed or investigated more than 21,016 tips, letters and emails and detectives have traveled to 19 states to interview or speak with more than 1,000 individuals in connection to this crime.
Thanks to the huge advances in DNA technology, multiple suspects have been run through the system to check for matches. CBI has updated over 750 reference samples with the latest DNA technology. The Boulder Police Department works closely with CBI on future DNA advancements.
Additionally, Boulder Police have worked with CBI to ensure the DNA in the system can be compared correctly to new DNA samples that have been uploaded to ensure accuracy.
That DNA is checked regularly for any new matches.
As the Department continues to use new technology to enhance the investigation, it is actively reviewing genetic DNA testing processes to see if those can be applied to this case moving forward.
Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact our tipline at 303-441-1974, BouldersMostWanted@bouldercolorado.gov or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) or www.nococrimestoppers.com

    Dayton’s Christmas Spree Killing- 1992

December 30, 1992: The Associated Press DAYTON – “Misguided friendship, a bad childhood or peer pressure may have motivated four people charged in a killing spree that left five people dead.

Thank you to the Dayton Daily News for their great reporting. They provided much of the material for this week’s episode.

It was more than a simple lust for killing that provoked the 40-hour shooting spree that also left three people injured, three mental health specialists said Tuesday.

Two adults and two juveniles are charged with aggravated murder and robbery in connection with the shootings that began Thursday.

The Dayton Daily News reported today that Marvallous M. Keene, 19; Heather N. Matthews, 20; DeMarcus Smith, 17; and Laura Taylor, 16, were part of a gang that called itself the Downtown Posse.”

  • Delphi Murder Update: With Nic from True Crime Garage

Delphi Murder Update: With Nic from True Crime Garage

Nic from the True Crime Garage Podcast joins me this week to make heads and tails of the new information out of Delphi. We work through the police statement and what it all means. While we both agree this is a significant move in the investigation but we do our best not to speculate. Again, this case will be solved by someone who knows something.

    https://www.in.gov/isp/crime-reporting/delphi-homicide-investigation/

The Delphi Police Department, the Carroll County Sheriff, the Indiana State Police, and the FBI are asking for your assistance in identifying the suspect in the double homicide of two teenage girls, Abigail J. “Abby” Williams, 13, and Liberty Rose Lynn “Libby” German, 14, both from Delphi.

In Monday’s press conference, authorities turned to the public in hopes of gleaning more information about the phony profile creator, known as a catfish, who went by the name “anthony_shots” on social media between 2016 and 2017.

Police released photos of a male model used by the suspect, emphasizing that they were in contact with the model, who is not a person of interest in their investigation.

“The fictitious anthony_shots profile used images of a known male model and portrayed himself as being extremely wealthy and owning numerous sports cars,” said Public Information Officer Sgt. Jeremy Piers. “The creator of the fictitious profile used this information while communicating with juvenile females to solicit nude images, obtain their addresses, and attempt to meet them.”

On Monday, February 13th, 2017, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the two young girls were let off near the Monon High Bridge, an abandoned rail bridge over Deer Creek to walk around and hang out. They were to be picked up later in the afternoon, but did not show up there at the previously arranged time. Following an extensive search, at approximately 12:15 p.m. on February 14, 2017, the bodies of the two girls were found in a wooded area near the Delphi Historic Trail, approximately one-half mile upstream from the bridge.

    Barry Seal & Iran Contra

This story was so fascinating they even made a movie out of it starring Tom Cruise, American Made. Barry Seal was one of the most renowned American dealers that smuggled weapons and drugs in the USA. Seal is proof the American Government was in bed with drug smuggling and flooding the streets with cocaine. Which not so coincidentally led to to crack epidemic. Lots of questions remain unanswered from the CIA and DEA.

Barry Seal became an aviator at only 16 years old, and as soon as he received his pilot licence, he started smuggling weapons. His tale of excess has led to books, movies, and a host of conspiracy theories.

He had strong relations with the Madellín Cartel, i.e. the Colombian drug cartel led by Pablo Escobar

Part 1/2: Nic from the True Crime Garage podcast joins me to discuss Judy Martins. On the night of May 23rd, 1978, Judy Martins went out with friends for a little fun. Memorial Day Weekend was on the horizon and she had plans to go out of town with her friends.
Police say she left her friends dorm at Kent State University to walk a short distance to her dormitory. This would be the last time she would be seen again. She wouldn’t be reported missing for more than a day since she lived alone. The case never seemed to materialize and eventually went cold.
Unfortunately, Judy’s parents have passed away and this case remains unsolved to this day. Her brother and sister would like to see this case resolved and believes it can be done.

I will be representing Who Killed…?, Who Killed Amy Mihaljevic?, and My Passion Case on Podcast row at CrimeCon 2020 in Orlando.

I am very much looking forward to talking with the listeners about the cases I have covered.

I am your host Bill Huffman and on this week’s show we will be wrapping up my conversation with producer and reporter Maggie Freleng, about the Long Island Serial Killer aka The Gilgo Beach Murders.

As I mentioned last week, all true crime fanatics know about this case. But if you don’t and have not listened to part one of my conversation with Maggie, please go back and listen, or you’ll be quite lost in this episode.

The true-crime community and the families of the victims have renewed hope this case will be solved. Because for the first time in a long time, a press conference was held to show off new evidence in relation to the case.

The Suffolk County police released pictures of a belt that was found at one of the crime scenes.

The reason why this could be a significant piece of evidence is the belt had the initials “WH” or “HW” painted on. They said the belt had been in their possession for more than a decade after it was found with one of the bodies.

Since it didn’t belong to any of the victims the police said they were confident the belt was “handled” by the killer.

They did not say how they can be so sure so we are left to speculate until we hear more.

A picture of the belt was released and the picture is up on the sloburnmedia.com website.

Police don’t seem to like to use the phrase cold case anymore but this case was cold. There had not been any new information in years, other than the lawsuits you heard about in the trailer.

But I will admit this time feels like they are giving a full pressure push to solve the case. They went as far as creating a new website, gilgonews.com so the public can submit information or tips.

The first set of remains was discovered in 20-10 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert.

It when Gilbert’s body wouldn’t be found for another year, across the way on Oak Beach.

The total number of bodies discovered during their searches was now 11.

In a rather callous way of explaining the deaths, police said at the time, since most of the women worked in prostitution it was basically the job that killed them.

The first autopsy on Gilbert concluded she had died from drowning and drug overdose. Despite the fact only being 18 inches of water.

The family brought in Dr. Michael Boden to perform an independent autopsy on Gilbert’s body. He determined she was killed due to homicidal strangulation because the hyoid bone was missing.

The autopsy also showed that Shanna she did not die from a  drug overdose or drowning.

The family of Shannan Gilbert fought the police for more information about their daughter’s death but were seemingly stonewalled by the Suffolk County Police.

The family hired the charismatic attorney John Ray to represent anything to do with Shannan. He was always suing somebody to get more information.

One crazy thing to note is Mari Gilbert, Shannan’s mom, was murdered by her youngest daughter.

Just a tragic set of circumstances for a family already torn apart due to a murder.

Apparently, Gilbert had a 21-minute conversation or call with a 9-1-1 dispatcher and the family attorney sued for the release of the tapes.

While police looked for Shannan the found four bodies that had obviously been dumped there.

As Maggie said in Part One, the demographics of the area are very wide-ranging and the terrain is mostly barren. true-crime

Police found more bodies on Gilgo Beach, which is on the opposite side of Oak Beach.

For whatever reason, the FBI was not involved with the case until the last five years so some of these new leads may be driven in part by their participation.

Now that I’ve run you through the basics of the case, let’s re-join my conversation with producer and true crime star, Maggie Freleng, and take a final look at the Long Island Serial Killer.

All true-crime aficionados know about the Gilgo Beach Murders and mysterious Long Island Serial Killer.

This past Thursday authorities held a press conference to show off new evidence in relation to the investigation.

The Suffolk County police on Long Island released photos of what it said could be a significant piece of evidence: a black leather belt with the letters “WH” or “HM” found at the scene a decade ago.

The authorities said they are confident the belt was handled by the killer because it didn’t belong to any of the victims.

This is very interesting news since the case has been kind of cold for the past few years.

Police must think there is a new opportunity to catch the killer because they also launched a new website gilgonews.com to collect new tips and information about the case.

The first set of remains was discovered in 20-10 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert.

It wouldn’t be for another year when Gilbert’s body would be found across the way on neighboring Oak Beach.

Once Gilbert’s body was recovered the total number of bodies found was 11.

Police said most of the women found worked in prostitution and advertised on such services as Craigslist.

When an independent autopsy was performed on Gilbert’s body, they were able to determine she was killed due to homicidal strangulation.

The reason for the second autopsy was the first one concluded Gilbert had died from drowning and drug overdose.

The autopsy was able to conclude she did not die from natural disease, drug overdose or drowning.

Gilbert had vanished after visiting a customer and was told to have freaked out and started banging on neighbor’s doors asking for help and saying people were trying to kill her.

While searching for Gilbert, police found four bodies in various stages of decomposition.

More remains were uncovered on Gilgo Beach, which is roughly 40 miles from New York City.

The FBI didn’t join the task force until 20-15, so this new evidence may be a result of their participation.

Now that I’ve run you through the basics of the case, let’s join my conversation with producer and star in the true-crime community, Maggie Freleng to take a deeper dive into the Long Island Serial Killer.

Unfortunately, this case is too big to cover in one episode so tune in next week for part two. Meanwhile, thank you so much again to Maggie from Missing Maura Murray, NPR, Crawlspace, and everything true crime.

And thank you for tuning in to my new show.
